Fall Golf Checklist: 5 Services Every Golfer Should Consider in September
September 1, 2025As summer heat fades and crisp autumn breezes roll into North Carolina, fall can be one of the best times of year to play golf. The courses are less crowded, the temperatures are more manageable, and the changing foliage adds a beautiful backdrop. That said, fall also brings new challenges — cooler air, changing turf behavior, falling leaves, and unpredictable weather.
At Kelly’s Golf, we want you to make the most of your fall rounds. Here are practical tips and strategies to help you play better golf this season — especially in Greensboro, the Triad, and across North Carolina.
1. Dress in layers (and bring extras)
Fall weather in NC can swing from chilly mornings to mild afternoons. Dressing in layers gives you flexibility. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add a light sweater or vest, and keep a windbreaker or vest handy. Avoid anything too bulky that restricts your swing.
Also, consider packing light gloves, a beanie or headband, and maybe an extra pair of socks (because mornings can be damp). Rain is more likely this time of year, so waterproof outer layers are smart, too.
2. Adjust to slower course conditions
Cooler air and increased moisture slow down greens, fairways, and tee shots. Here are a few course-condition tips:
- Greens slow down: Expect slower putts. You may need to swing a bit firmer or adjust your usual speed.
- Higher mowing heights: Course superintendents often raise mowing heights in fall to help turf store energy over the winter. This means longer grass — less roll off drives, more resistance.
- Overseeding or colorants: Some courses overseed or use turf colorants to maintain a greener look during cooler months. Know which applies at your home courses so you can adapt.
Because the grass is growing more slowly, it also means less forgiveness for poor contact or rough play. Mistakes might be more penal this time of year.
3. Be mindful of leaves, debris & ball visibility
One of the most obvious fall challenges: leaves. They fall fast and in abundance, and they can:
- Hide your ball
- Interfere with lines on the green
- Collect on fairways and hazards
Some superintendents clear debris during the day, but it’s often a moving target.
To cope:
- Use high-visibility golf balls (neon yellow, orange) so they stand out among leaves.
- Watch the ball until it lands — don’t assume its location right away.
- Bring a towel, brush, or small leaf tool to clear debris around your lie or line.
- Be aware of local rules: many courses adopt “preferred lies” in fall, allowing lift-clean-place in certain areas.
4. Play with strategy, not just strength
Because the conditions change in fall, smart strategy often beats brute force:
- Use the wind: Autumn can bring gusty conditions. Take time to gauge wind direction before each shot. Adjust club selection accordingly — sometimes less power and better shape wins over brute distance.
- Mind extra club: Given slower greens and firmer fairways, you might need to club up for approach shots or putts.
- Control your rhythm: Cold muscles can tighten. Make sure you warm up, stretch, and maintain a smooth tempo, especially in the first few holes.
5. Keep your gear clean and ready
Fall conditions are wetter and muddier. Dirt, moisture, and debris can stick to club faces and grooves, reducing spin and control.
- Wipe your clubs after every shot, especially on rough or damp lies.
- Clean the grooves well (use a brush) so you maintain control on shots around the green.
- Consider carrying your own towel or small cleaning kit.
- If your grips are worn or hard, fall is a great time to regrip. A fresh grip helps maintain control in cooler, drier air.
6. Use this season to address weaknesses
Since competition tends to quiet down in fall, it’s a golden opportunity to work on parts of your game that need improvement:
- Try a fall fitting session at Kelly’s Golf. Your swing may subtly change with cooler temperatures, so getting your clubs dialed in now can make a difference.
- Focus on short game, putting, or shots you avoid in summer heat — when the pressure is lower, you’ll improve faster.
- Take advantage of our repair and adjustment services (reshafting, lie/loft tweaks, regripping) to ensure your gear matches your game. (Visit our Golf Club Services page at Kelly’s Golf for more.)
- Log your rounds and track how fall conditions affect your stats (driving distance, greens in regulation, putting).
7. Plan your tee times wisely
In fall, daylight shrinks, and morning frost or wet turf might delay play. Check for:
- Frost delays: Early morning rounds may be postponed if grass is frosty. Always call ahead.
- Cooling temperatures: Midday is usually your safest bet for more stable conditions.
- Course maintenance schedules: Some courses aerify or do fall maintenance — avoid days when greens are closed or rolling is disrupted.
