August 26, 2019Considering custom clubs? Customized clubs reduce errors, increase the length and accuracy of shots, and can reduce average scores by as much as 5 strokes. There are 3 main things you need to consider when purchasing custom clubs.
1. ClubHeads
Two of the most important variables in customizing your clubheads are “lie” and “loft.”
The “lie” of the clubhead is the angle between the sole of the club and the shaft. If the club is improperly tilted up or down, the face will not be pointed in the right direction. Depending on your unique swing, we can determine whether your game would benefit from a more upright angle or one that’s flatter than standard.
The “loft” of the clubhead determines how far your shot will go. According to the Association of Golf Customfitters Professionals (AGCP): “The loft of your irons, along with your clubhead speed, is what determines how far you hit each club. In a set of irons, you want the distance difference between each iron to be as close to the same as possible so you are not guessing which club to hit for what distance.”
2. Shafts
The length, weight, and flex (i.e. stiffness) of the club’s shaft significantly affect any golfer’s ability to hit long and true. According to AGCP: “The same shaft will perform differently for golfers with different swing mechanics.” Obviously, one size does not fit all.
The standard shaft length is designed for a 5’ 9” tall person. Based on wrist-to-floor measurements, the optimal length would vary depending on the golfer’s actual height.
Lighter shaft weights tend to increase swing speed and distance, while heavier shafts produce less backspin and a lower ball trajectory.
Those with softer, slower swings tend to benefit more from softer flexes, while those with faster swings benefit more from a stiffer shaft flex.
3. Grips
The club’s grip may be the most unappreciated factor affecting a golfer’s performance. A grip with the wrong size, weight, or composition will increase tension and fatigue in the hands leading to less club control and impaired performance. A grip that is too thin, for example, can cause you to hook more shots. Likewise, a grip that is too thick may cause slicing.
